The Great Story
(This is the story of dragonkind’s origin in the Dragon System where Darnath is from)
Dragons have an oral history and long memory. They can reach back to the beginning of dragon memories. It takes a concentrated effort to do so, but all dragons have this ability. Dragons love to tell stories and share their memories with any who will listen. There are some who are master story tellers though who remember the main dragon stories to be told and retold when needed.
This particular story is called The Great Story because it is the first dragon memory, the beginning of all dragonkind. This story begins on a particular dragon planet (and there are many) called Me-ear - also known as Dreish. This planet is new and has not much life on it yet, but a few forests that still are not grown too big. The planet is conscious and aware of itself and the life upon it.
There appeared on this planet one day, 12 eggs. No one knows for sure how these eggs came to be there. There is much conjecture, but the majority believe that the creator placed them there. This planet had 4 suns and so was very hot. It was not the paradise that we know it to be today. Three of the suns were about the same size (about 3 times the size of your sun on earth), the 4th was very large and very hot and so made the planet very hot also, most of the heat came from this 4th sun.
The eggs were on a ledge where they could be kept warm part of the day and cool at other times, so as not to overheat. An ideal location for hatching eggs. These eggs were the original 12 beings that had split from Source, who wanted to experience physicality and so choose to hatch in egg form so as to ease into physical existance without having to go through too many changes in spiritual form. This was an easy way to be birthed into the physical realm. They could undergo many changes within the egg until they chose their final forms.
The first 3 eggs hatched and they were dragons. Very much like the dragons of today. The next 3 eggs hatched they were 3 mammals. The next one hatched and it was the atmosphere. Yes the atmosphere hatched from an egg. Until then, there was no atmosphere on this planet. The next 3 eggs hatched, 2 were predators, one was the plants. The last egg hatched and it was the birds we know on our planet today. For those of you who are paying attention you might notice that only 11 eggs have been spoken of and wonder what happened to the last egg. (This is a little joke the story-tellers use to see who is paying attention). This last egg hatched and it was another dragon, but different than the others - it was a silver dragon, bright and shiny.
The dragons wandered off together walking in one direction. They were not hungry, they did not know hunger yet. They were born aware of their spiritual selves and this was all new to them. The mammals wandered off together and the predators, but not eating either. They also did not know hunger yet. The atmosphere lifted into the sky and was growing rapidly, but still a baby yet. Now there was color to the sky and clouds and some rain but not much, the atmosphere was still too young. The plants begin to grow right there, deciding to stay in that area, though they had the ability to move when born. The birds decided to stay with the plants and not travel elsewhere at this time.
The dragons wandered and wandered for days walking in one direction together. The predators and mammals walked for some few days and found a forest that had originally been on the planet and headed off in that direction. The dragons continued on until they came to a body of water and decided to stay there for a time.
These beings had the ability to communicate with the planet and knew the planet would take care of them. The planet was happy to have life on it, pleased to see things growing and walking upon its surface. The dragons did not need to eat, the planet nurtured them with her energy whenever they needed it and they drank the water that was available. It was fresh water, not salty.
This water had many fish in it and other life already. The dragons asked the planet if they might eat some of these fish. The planet said to wait a bit and they would produce more fish so that they might eat and have enough. After a bit there were so many fish, that even the dragons could not eat them all and they were happy by this water. Eating and drinking and lounging about just being lazy. No one wondered what abilities they had yet, they were just experiencing life and being happy.
The only thing that the dragons decided would be nice to have would be some shade. There were no trees in their area and so they began to ask the planet about some shade and wonder if they might go somewhere else to find some. It was very hot in the open with the 4 suns. They looked back the way they had come and saw the plants approaching them, so knew eventually there would be shade coming their way and so were satisfied.
The atmosphere continued to grow as the dragons and other life that had birthed from the eggs. It was beginning to rain some more. It came to the dragons understanding, (they do not know how) that sometimes when an atmosphere is growing and it gets stronger it will rain and rain and rain and sometimes flood certain areas. So they began to look for higher ground and some shelter. They did not mind getting wet, but some days you just don’t want to be wet.
This is when they discovered the mountains. There were not many mountains at this time, there are more today. The mountain builders have not been born yet, but soon there will be more mountains on the planet. The dragons moved to these mountains and asked the planet if they might not reproduce themselves. The planet said that they could, but only 4 or 5 eggs per pair - no more than that. The dragons agreed and listened to the planet.
The predators that were living in the original forest asked the planet if they might also reproduce. The planet said that they could also reproduce, but to limit their litters to a certain size, but the predators did not listen and had as many as they wanted, sometimes up to 13 in a litter. The predators ended up dying out pretty quickly on this planet, because they would not follow the planet’s instructions. They only lasted about 15,000 years. When it came to lean times, they would die off because there was not enough food for them to eat.
The dragons found out that the first 3 dragons to be born were all males. Two of the males were a dark color, maybe from the sun. The other was a red, maybe this was also from the sun or maybe it was the color it decided to take on. The silver dragon was the only female. She was so bright and shiny and stood out amongst the other dragons.
She mated with all three males and had 3 different clutches of eggs. Usually a female will only have one clutch, but she choose to have 3, one for each of the males. The silver dragon was the mother of all dragonkind - she raised all the children in her clutches and took care of them. The dragons were of all colors and races at birth, though dragons can go through many color changes as they grow sometimes. Sometimes only one or two changes, sometimes up to a dozen different colors before deciding on its final color. The genders evened out during these births so there were as many males as females.
It was getting hotter on the planet at this time, the 4th sun was increasing in size and heat and the dragons noticed, but did not know what to do. They continued to reproduce with each other, the original dragons also mating with the offspring, creating more and more dragons, but within the limits placed on them by the planet.
It was beginning to be known that certain dragons had certain abilities. Some dragons could breath fire, others water. Some were healers, some builders, and so on. The silver dragon could not find her ability. She tried many things. She tried to breath fire, but nothing would come out. She tried to do some of what the others were doing, but nothing seemed to work. She wondered what her ability was but could not seem to find it.
One day the atmosphere had a storm and lightning hit the ground and created fire. The dragons were concerned because they did not want this fire to burn down the forest that had finally arrived near them. They tried to put it out as best they could, but it was getting out of control. If the forest burned, the planet would have to regrow and start over again and it would be a strain on the whole planet.
The silver dragon approached the fire also trying to help extinguish it and inhaled. Some of the flames went into her body, but she was unharmed. It felt good to breath in the fire and she wanted more. She went all around the fire breathing it in until it was completely extinguished. Afterwards, she wanted more. She went to the fire breathing dragons and had them breath out fire for her to breath in. She couldn’t get enough and soon was dissatisfied and wanting more and more.
Meanwhile, the 4th sun was increasing in size and getting hotter and hotter on the planet, until the dragons asked the planet what they could do about it. The planet did not know what to do either. The silver dragon looked at this sun and wondered if she could breath in some of the fire that it had. She flew off to the sun and the other dragons were concerned for her, but did not stop her. She was afterall the mother of their kind and did not want to lose her. The original 3 males were already dead and they did not want to lost their mother also.
She was gone a very long time to the sun. The other dragons did not know if she was still alive or not, but they noticed the sun getting smaller after several days. Soon it was as small as the other 3 suns, but there was an outline where the original size of the sun had been. They did not know what this was, this outline - but it was obviously something. They still wondered if the silver dragon lived or not. Not sure that someone could live in the heat of the sun.
Eventually after some time the 4th sun was completely gone, leaving only the outline where it had once been. One day the silver dragon came back, but she was so hot from the heat of the sun inside of her, she could only stay a little while with the other dragons. She said she would leave and find other suns that wanted to be extinguished. Sometimes suns would explode, but she would find the ones that did not want to explode and breath them in instead so they could die quietly. She would only do this if the suns wanted it though, if they wanted to explode, she would let them explode. She left the other 3 suns in the sky which are still here to this day. Now we have darkness on this planet, before with the 4 suns, it was very rare to have darkness.
The dragons were afraid of the silver dragon when she returned. Afraid of her heat and ability and that she would burn them up and the planet too. What kind of dragon was this that could swallow a sun? They thought she was a god, but she said no, she was only a dragon. She went off and it is not known if she still lives out there, swallowing suns that want to be swallowed or if she has died.
The outline that was left by the 4th sun became the 3rd planet to this solar system (Anabis). It is called a gas giant, but it is not really gas, it is actually very dense. But it is said that suns never really die, so young dragons are cautioned that if they want to visit this planet to see for themselves, they better be careful because it could be ignited back into a sun again.
So this is the story that we dragons call The Great Story. Every dragon has access to this memory and it is our first. We know these events are true, because we remember them. We know of the original 12 eggs and what hatched from them because we remember it. We know of the silver dragon and the 4th sun because we remember them.
